Fox News vs Mass Effect - What A Load of...
As a game developer and fan of games, I have to honestly say that I am shocked at the one sided and completely biased views that Fox News recently took against Bioware's game "Mass Effect" (you can view the TV interview at Kotaku). Socked in the sense that a nation wide news program can get away with suck bullshit fear-mongering by trying to present what they did as any reason measure of the truth.
The whole segment was basicly Jeff Keighley being unable to get more than two words to defend a properly rated game because some femist cow, who is a so called expert in pyschology wants to pimp her own agenda as to why "women fail" and how our youth are being subverted by games and not bad parenting. It made me sick as a gamer and a game developer to watch my craft get attacked by an organized group who has zero knowledge on the subject at hand. The issue should not have been voilence or nudity, but the fact that Mass Effect is properly rated for the gameplay it provides.
Just for reference M rated games are categorized as:
Titles rated M (Mature) have content that may be suitable for persons ages 17 and older. Titles in this category may contain intense violence, blood and gore, sexual content, and/or strong language.
So with that said how can Fox News and its made up panel of "experts" honestly say that the industry failed? Please tell me because as someone intelligent enough to make games I fail to see the logic that Fox News brought forth to attack what is an artistic game and the industry that does a great job at regulating itself as a whole. But then again that would be too easy to point the blame where it is.
Cudos again to Keighley for being able to defend what he could. He was clearly the only intelligent person in the discussion and had he not been cut off would have more than likely put everyone in their place and diffused a situation before it got out of hand like it has.
Also as an aside, why the hell do people categorize video games as an elementary art form that is suitable only for children ages 4 thru 12? It's an entertainment media and a form of art that can be appreciated by all, young and old, hence why we have a rating system. It just pisses me off to see all these idiots in the world cry like Revernd Lovejoys wife (from the Simpsons) "But what about the Children! Would someone please think of the children", when obviously someone did think of the children, hence why the game was rated M for Mature. Not to be played or sold to anyone under the age of 17.
